The youth services program at Merrick House's Starkweather location provides children from eight to 18 years old an opportunity to participate in activities focused on growth and development. Youth can take part in cooking classes, arts and crafts, tutoring, sports, and service projects. They are also encouraged to participate in discussions on issues affecting them today such as AIDS, sexuality, teen pregnancy, and drug and alcohol abuse. Sessions emphasize building self-esteem; improving communication skills; learning to cope; making responsible decisions; and learning to develop and maintain positive relationships with family and peers. Staff also provides individual and family counseling.
Merrick House is committed to partnering with other community organizations in order to maximize available resources to community members. The kids of Merrick House are participating in the Youth Outdoors Program, which is a partnership between the Cleveland Metroparks and OSU extension 4-H. Youth Outdoors provides outdoor adventures for youth (age 8-18 years) in the city of Cleveland, such as hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, fishing, biking, and cross-country skiing. The goal is to provide young people the opportunities to experience nature and gain life skills that they would not otherwise have.
Merrick House received the MyCom Out-of-School Time grant from Starting Point, along with community partners Tremont West Development Corporation, Tremont Montessori School and the Cleveland Music School Settlement. This grant has four goals: (1) to more fully engage Tremont youth in decision-making and neighborhood planning, (2) to increase the variety of out-of-school time programming offered to youth in the Tremont community, (3) to increase available structured summer out-of-school time opportunities for youth in Tremont, and (4) to provide out-of-school time activities to youth at Tremont Montessori School. As part of this grant Merrick House has established a Youth Leadership Council, and expanded programming to include a mixed martial arts class and music therapy classes for youth, and a summer youth basketball league.
